How an alien invasion turned a new KC festival into a 20k-person sellout
Strategy Framework
-
✘ The Brief
Flyover set out to be Kansas’ biggest hip-hop festival, but its initial branding (think trucks and wheat fields) wasn’t hitting the spot. Ticket sales lagged. Our task was to create a brand fans could rally behind.
-
✦ The Big Idea
Fans want more than a lineup, they want a story. Flyover was already unique: a major hip hop festival in a region sometimes overlooked on tours. We turned that outsider energy into a colorful, irreverent alien saga, layered with regional references that fans could instantly relate to.
-
➽ The Activation
Bold poster art from local illustrators grounded the festival in Midwest creativity. The alien saga expanded across every channel: social, paid media, OOH, merch, and guerrilla. Shareable visuals hyped artists and fans alike, amplifying reach organically.
-
✿ The Impact
Flyover grew into a recognizable cultural moment, shared on local news and fan socials, driving sell-outs and peak attendance of 20k+ with headliners like Cardi B and Post Malone.
“The Simpsons Leak”
I strategized and animated this unofficial lineup video, then seeded it through promoter channels to look like a fan edit. The stunt built underground buzz for Flyover just before the official announcement.
The Cardi B Edition
For Cardi B’s edition, we pushed Flyover’s identity into orbit with a bold new palette and cosmic visuals. I animated paid media motion assets for every artist, fueling buzz as they spread across socials and helping the festival sell out.
